FAMILIAR PLATFORM, NEW TECHNOLOGY

The goal of this project was to electro-mechanically integrate off-the-shelf Barnett crossbow components, such as the Barnett Ghost 410 and Crank Cocking Device, onto the familiar AR-15 platform. Most electronic crossbows create an unfamiliar experience between user and firearm since these designs are tailored to the crossbow first. STEL’s unique approach to this project creates a familiar look, feel, and user experience to the AR-15.

The Barnett AR-15 Electronic Release Crossbow is in a league of its own. Blending proven performance with 21st century technology, this 185lb draw crossbow sports an electronically actuated release that makes it all too easy to put bolts on target at various ranges dialed using the integrated LED range readout. Weighing only 7.2 pounds and just 20″ axle-to-axle, this bow challenges traditional approaches to crossbow design.

LCD READOUT

The LCD readout displays range, bolt speed, and safety features such as “ready-to-fire”. This brings a fresh, 21st century spin to the age-old crossbow.

REDUNDANT SAFETY

A dual-safety system eliminates unintended firing. A mechanical, twist-lever system and an electrical, dry-fire eliminator, combine to bring top-tier safety.

WEIGHT ADJUSTABLE

Integrating a 3-weight adjustable trigger, quickly change pull weight on the go to adapt to the user preference or accommodate gloves.

SOLENOID ACTUATED

Unique combinations of levers, pins, and rollers create appropriate force vectors for a pull-release system.

FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS

Creating a portable, field-collapsible design requires keen attention given to the overall product weight and balance between material selection, geometry, and manufacturing processes. Using Finite Element Analysis, our Engineering team was able to calculate and minimize areas of max stress while optimizing the strength to weight ratio.

PROTOTYPE VALIDATION

Our Engineering team created a functional prototype by combining CNC machined AR-15 parts with off-the-shelf Barnett Crossbow components in order to validate assembly mechanics. Further iterations allowed for improvement of key functionality, preparation for high-volume manufacturing, and a more seamless user experience.
